Finishing - Reclaimed wood can be finished using any of the accepted techniques for finishing wood floors. That said, we've found the best results can obtained through the following procedures;

On the more rustic grades of floor, a light screening with an orbital floor sander is all that is necessary. The very worst thing you can do to this type of floor is to sand aggressively as this will remove much of the unique patina. If, on initial installation you find unacceptably rough areas, then a light 'spot' sanding with a palm sander and 120 grit paper is all that is necessary.

Tung oil based finishes work well on our floors. The very best tung oil finish we've found so far is made by Sutherland Welles. Oil-based polyurethanes are another acceptable finish, though the downside to polyurethane is that it's difficult to refinish without sanding the entire floor.

Antique Mixed Softwoods
Softwood Mix is one of our most rustic floors and it's best to finish
this with a light screening.
